Your Guide to The Boroughs of South London

Just as in the rest of the capital, South London has extensive public transport, despite only containing a small section of the Tube network. The suburban railway, buses, and trams more than make up for the shortfall.

Here is a guide to some of the boroughs that South London is divided up into:

Greenwich

Situated on the south bank of the Thames, this borough is famous around the world for being the location of the Prime Meridian – Greenwich Mean Time – on which all world times are based. Greenwich is also one of the five host boroughs for the 2012 Olympics and is home to the O2 arena, which hosts various concerts and exhibitions.

Kingston

Located in Southwest London, Kingston has a rich history. Many Roman artifacts have been uncovered there, and a church has stood on the same site in Kingston’s town centre for more than one thousand years. The borough’s more thrill-seeking residents may prefer to visit Chessington World of Adventures, which houses a theme park, a zoo, and an aquarium.

Lambeth

This borough struggles with its reputation for high unemployment and high crime rates. However, many towns in the borough, such as Gipsy Hill, are quiet, leafy suburbs, and gentrification is gradually changing some of the poorer areas. The area along the South Bank of the Thames is actually a thriving tourist spot, with the National Theatre, cafes, bars, and the famous landmark, the London Eye.

Merton

The TV show The Bill regularly used Merton as an outdoor filming location and the set of the fictional Sun Hill Police Station was actually situated in the borough. But Merton is arguably most famous for being the host of the Wimbledon tennis championships each year.

Richmond

This borough is home to some of the wealthiest areas in London and is considered a very desirable place to live by Londoners. Europe’s largest city park, Richmond Park, is located here. The park is three times bigger than Central Park in New York, and there are more than 600 deer wandering around inside. Kew Gardens and Hampton Court Park are also located in Richmond.

Southwark

Southwark, which received its name in the 9th Century, contains some of London’s most famous landmarks. Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, London Bridge, Tower Bridge, and the Millennium Bridge are all within its borders. Charles Dickens once lived in the borough and he chose to set some of his novels here.

Sutton

This borough contains 89 parks, including Oaks Park, Grove Park, and Beddington Park. Sports fans may enjoy living in Sutton; the area is home to numerous teams, including Sutton United Football Club, Sutton Cricket Club and Rosehill Table Tennis Club.

Wandsworth

The famously hectic Clapham Junction railway station is located in this borough. In their spare time, the area’s residents may enjoy the Battersea Arts Centre, Theatre 503, or Battersea Park.
