Table Tennis Paddles Penhold

Strange Ping Pong Grip?

I’ve started getting into table tennis and I’ve been using a style that is kinda like penhold but I’m holding the paddle between my pointer and middle fingers instead of thumb and pointer. It feels most comfortable to me, but I don’t want to learn a ‘faulty’ method for when I do become better and take on serious opponents.

Is this effective? Why or why not?

If it’s comfortable and works for you, then use it. But, in my opinion, that hold does seem very strange. I’m not 100% about how you would hit the ball, but I don’t think you can get much power or spin because holding the paddle between your pointer and middle finger doesn’t offer much control. Also, I don’t think you can have a solid backhand with that hold. I suggest giving the penhold or shakehand another try because those are the best holds. It depends what type of player you are, but typically shakehanders are more offensive/aggresive and use a lot of topspin, while penholders are more defensive and use many different spins. Good luck!
